CATEGORY - RELATIONSHIP

Are you looking for better techniques for improving your dialogue with others (e.g., peers, senior management, board members, frontline management and employees, direct reports, clients, family, friends)?  Dr. Haesun Moon’s interview with Lyssa deHart on deHart’s The Coaching Studio podcast offers thought-provoking and insightful guidance on how to listen for values, how to reduce the duration of circular conversation, and how changing just half of a word can impactfully meet unmet needs with an exceptional “return on investment” (ex., asking “is there something else rather than is there anything else”). In a topic-related podcast for Coaching Revealed, Dr. Jeffrey Yip speaks about the capacity unlocked when we engage in “pain storming” (deliberateness about understanding and acknowledging your talker’s/meeting attendees’ pain points).

Reflection/Call to Action

Are you one of the many hundreds of thousands who overestimate how well they listen? Do you find yourself most prone to a mindset of troubleshooting and problem-fixing? Think of a recent conversation or meeting you had in which that mindset ruled how you handled that conversation or meeting. Where could you have been both more intentional about listening for and acknowledging the speaker’s values and using words supporting those values to unlock greater constructive energy or flow? As you think about your next meeting, have a plan in place to listen with progressive intention more than an unchallenged rush toward solution.
