In an onstage interview with Fast Company, Strong Ground: The Lessons of Daring Leadership, The Tenacity of Paradox, And The Wisdom of the Human Spirit author Brené Brown instructed current and aspiring leaders in the audience with the following: "Don't confuse (executive) presence with preparedness." And, "How many of you would put money on a game when the team had no coach? "(Business) leaders are the only high-performing people in the world that do not have coaches."
Reflection/Call to Action
In what areas have you been compromising by leaning on "presence" more than preparedness? How is that compromise affecting teams and/or cultures of which you are a part? To what extent are others gambling on you as a high-performer who does not have a coach? Who can help hold you accountable in turning around from that shaky ground road back toward strong ground? What is your deadline for course-correcting and securing a steadfast accountability partner?
