"You cannot understand someone from a sound bite of information or even through a single heart-to-heart talk." (David Peterson, Mary Dee Hicks, Leader as Coach: Strategies for Coaching and Developing Others, p. 33. Print version)
Reflection/Call to Action
Am I truly seeking to understand who the person is that I am in disagreement with? Or, in reality am I seeking to "fix," "rescue," or "assimilate" that individual? What steps do I need to take to better listen to and hear this individual with judgement suspended? In what way(s) can I reframe my connection with this person to enrich our shared relationship? With whom can I partner to hold me accountable for developing myself in this way. How can I best acknowledge the empowerment this brings to my relationship?
